unfortunately messaging has stopped - samsung galaxy s iii (GT-I9300)

Problem
Unfortunately "Messaging" has Stopped occurs when the Messaging app on the Samsung Galaxy S III (GT-I9300 aka the international model) is launched.

OS version running at the time of the problem occured: Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean
The phone is not rooted and running stock without any disabled apps (including the preloaded bloatware).

Solution
In short, the solution doesn't require to root the phone.
1. Before doing anything, back up your SMS messages with an app from the Play Store. I used SMS Backup & Restore.
2. From the home screen, tap Apps > Settings > Application Manager.
3. Under the "All Apps" tab, search for "Messaging".
4. Tap "Messaging", select "Clear Data". After doing so, you should be able to access the stock SMS messaging app that comes with your phone.
5. Go into the "Messaging" app, tap the menu button and reenter the SMS service number. Check with your service provider for the number required to send SMS.

Additional notes
While I was searching for solutions, I used GO SMS Pro as a stop gap for accessing, receiving and sending SMS messages. At the same time whether to either do a full factory reset or root the phone to clear up the problem but those should be the resolve if the above can't be done.

UPDATE: Added step 5 after discovering that I wasn't able to send any SMS.
